Sheets.works put together an excellent but — perhaps ironically — unbylined visualization with this simple premise:

Billions of phones run on code looked after by a handful of people. We counted them from the code itself.

I had no idea SQLite or sudo were maintained by such a small number of individuals and — like many other examples in this story — seemingly without the financial support of the companies relying on their work. Some of those are among the most valuable companies on the planet.
