Pinterest’s Boring New Logo ⇥ underconsideration.com

Armin Vit, Brand New:

Without any fanfare or farewell, Pinterest has dropped its script wordmark in favor of a slightly modified — round tittle instead of square, tweaked “s” to pair better with the “e” — Neue Haas Grotesk in its Black weight. The pin-“P” badge remains and serves as the main identifier for Pinterest.

This redesign is just so strange. It pairs the still-quirky script-ish “P” in a fairly standard weight with a black weight sans-serif, which is a bizarre combination. And then they topped it off by replacing the squared-off tittle with a circle. San Francisco, Apple’s system font, has the same feature, but it looks right because the letters were designed with rounded tittles in mind. This just looks like the rectangle was erased and replaced. This new logo is not quirky in an interesting way; it’s boring in a slightly unique way.
